Anglers –

July 21, 2019

With summer progressing, we saw light
numbers of anglers arriving this past
week, though weather conditions are
stable with no tropical storms forming
at this time. Ocean swells are moderate
and winds were not much of a
factor, swirling from the south mainly
later in the day. Mostly sunny
skies, high temperatures in the mid-
80s, but with combined heat index it is
feeling more like 95 degrees. Ocean
conditions turned over yet again to
start the week following strong south
wind, this laid down the next day and
since the conditions have rebounded,
back up to 80 degrees and also blue
within a couple miles of shore.

Most of the fishing action for local
fleets was concentrated from the Iman
Bank and north to Vinorama, this is
where the water was cleaner. Using
caballito, moonfish, ballyhoo and
strips of squid anglers working the
bottom structure for a few red snapper,
bonito, cabrilla and amberjack,
though this action was spotty.
Highlight off the bottom were a handful
of
nice amberjack up to 50 lb.

Some yellowfin tuna were found near
Vinorama, trolling hoochie type lures,
drift fishing with strips of squid and
also some on yo-yo jigs, these tuna
were in the 10 to 20 lb. range, mid-
week was best, bite was on and off,
just like the ocean conditions.

We saw increased numbers of dorado
showing up, though the majority of
these
were smaller sized fish, but again a
couple of much larger bulls weighing
over 50 lb. were reported from a
cruiser fishing near Cabrillo Seamount,
scattered throughout the region,
striking on a variety of trolled
feathers
and rigging baits.

Along the shoreline anglers still had
chances at roosterfish, though
numbers were less now than in previous
weeks, more jack crevalle than
anything else.

Best chances at billfish seemed to be
straight offshore of San Jose del
Cabo and towards the 1150 spot, though
we did not have many anglers that
did try this option, we heard of
reports of some blue marlin strikes.

The combined sportfishing fleet
launching out of the panga area from
Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out an
estimated 57 charters for the week and
anglers reported an approximate fish
count of: 2 striped marlin, 2 blue
marlin, 29 dorado, 27 yellowfin tuna, 1
broomtail grouper, 1 pompano, 1
porgy, 8 leopard grouper, 26 Mexican
bonito, 16 red snapper, 4 yellow
snapper, 11 amberjack, 15 roosterfish,
32 jack crevalle and 24 triggerfish.

Anglers –

July 14, 2019

Now in the midst of the summer season
we are progressively feeling warmer
conditions and increased humidity. High
temperatures around 90 degrees,
quite a few tropical clouds earlier in
the week, burning off with the heat
of the day. Ocean water temperatures
are now ranging from 76 to 86 degrees,
warmest area offshore and towards Los
Frailes. Swift currents sweeping in
and causing off colored green
conditions sporadically in isolated
areas,
changing daily, but no cold water now,
80 degrees all the way to the Golden
Gate Banks on the Pacific. Steady
southern swells push in this time of
year, surfers from all over the world
arrive, in recent days 5 to 6 foot
swells were common. Winds were
variable, swirling from north, east and
south, creating rolling seas,
especially later in the day.

There have already been several named
tropical storm systems follow paths
out west, presently there is a low
pressure system moving off to the west,
located several hundred miles from
southern Baja, is not forecast to make
any impact on land, just a bit more
tropical feeling.

Live bait available has been the same
now for the past month, caballito,
moonfish, mullet, ballyhoo and slabs of
squid. On the offshore grounds
there are increased schools of small
skipjack and bolito moving in and
these always can make good bait option
for larger gamefish species.

The warmer water has also brought in
larger marlin, in recent days we have
heard of daily reports of blue marlin
being hooked into, at least one of
about 240 lb. was landed and others to
over 400 lb. were battled and broken
off. Still some striped marlin in the
area, but most of them are now closer
to Southern California searching for
cooler water and their preferred
mackerel food source.

Early in the week anglers found a small
grade of football sized yellowfin
tuna spread out in open water around
the San Luis Bank, trolling small
hoochies produced scattered results,
time of year we see these small tuna
show. Only a few yellowfin tuna to 50
lb. were reported this week, so far
nothing going on larger cows being
seen, the next several weeks is when
things change rapidly and we would
expect to see schools of larger
yellowfin tuna move on to local
grounds. No wahoo reported, only a
handful
of dorado reported, the majority small
sized and being released.

Off the bottom there was on and off
action for red snapper, amberjack,
leopard grouper and bonito. Anglers
used yo-yo type jigs, as well as
various baits. This is the month when
we normally see the largest amberjack
of the season, this week we weighed in
a 83 lb. amberjack for angler Eric
Chen, from Las Vegas, he fished with
skipper Chuy on the super panga
Fortuna. We have not seen the run of
dogtooth snapper develop yet, this is
peak time for them.

Along the shore there is scattered
action for jack crevalle and
roosterfish
to over 40 lb., though we have not
really seen a significant big run of
these fish this year.

*T*he combined sportfishing fleet
launching out of the panga area from
Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out an
estimated 69 charters for the week and
anglers reported an approximate fish
count of: 7 striped marlin, 3 blue
marlin, 8 dorado, 24 yellowfin tuna, 3
broomtail grouper, 14 leopard
grouper, 95 Mexican bonito, 52 red
snapper, 6 yellow snapper, 19
amberjack,
30 roosterfish, 38 jack crevalle and 45
triggerfish.

Anglers –

July 7, 2019

This week the season’s first major
hurricane developed and passed off to
the west of the Baja Peninsulas, this
system, Hurricane Barbara reached
close to category five strength,
luckily for everyone this storm
followed a
path far enough offshore to not cause
any impact with land. We did feel an
increase in humidity and ocean swells
increased noticeably. Another
significant weather factor was the
strong south winds that picked up early
in week, once again pushing in cooler
greenish currents, dropping water
temperatures into the 68 degree range.
Now the winds have resided, but the
damage has been done and we now have to
patiently wait for conditions to
rebound, which presently is a day to
day process, now the water is starting
to look a bit cleaner and is up to the
72/73 degree range.

Anglers were using caballito, moonfish
mainly for bait, finding very tough
fishing conditions all around. Surface
action was extremely slim after
Monday. Anglers that did work hard off
of the bottom structure accounted
for a mix of red snapper, Mexican
bonito, cabrilla, triggerfish and
amberjack, though this action was not
consistent and changed daily. A
handful of quality fish were taken, we
saw amberjack and roosterfish to
over 40 lb., also one nice grouper of
about 70 lb., though most charters
averaged just a handful of fish in
combination. Anglers were using various
baits, as well as yo-yo jigs for this
action off of the rocky high spots.

The action for tuna, dorado and
billfish came to standstill due to the
green cold water, though the week
started off with a few marlin being
found, one blue marlin of an estimated
250 lb. was released, and a
scattering of striped marlin were also
accounted for. We do expect for
conditions to rebound quickly and then
we anticipate much improved action.

Along the shoreline it was the
roosterfish and jack crevalle that were
dominated the action, though this bite
also became very difficult in the
turned over conditions.

*T*he combined sportfishing fleet
launching out of the panga area from
Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out an
estimated 53 charters for the week and
anglers reported an approximate fish
count of: 3 striped marlin, 1 blue
marlin, 1 dorado, 2 yellowfin tuna, 2
broomtail grouper, 8 leopard grouper,
1 gulf grouper, 125 Mexican bonito, 32
red snapper, 5 yellow snapper, 15
amberjack, 26 roosterfish, 22 jack
crevalle and 45 triggerfish.

Anglers –

June 23, 2019

Well the summer season is now
officially here, local weather patterns
are
steadily warming, some scattered
morning cloud cover, quickly burning
off
as the sun rises higher into the sky,
daytime highs reaching 90 degrees. We
noticed more crowds of family
vacationers arriving, taking advantage
of
early summer vacation time. Winds were
lighter, mainly picking up from the
south later in the day. Ocean water
temperatures has quickly rebounded back
near the 80 degree mark in the
direction of San Jose del Cabo and
further
north. Also clarity is much cleaner on
these same grounds in the direction
of the Sea of Cortez, while the Pacific
still remains greenish and much
cooler.

In and around the marina area the bait
vendors are finding caballito,
mullet and some moonfish, other bait
options has been strips of squid and
ballyhoo, as well as some bolito and
smaller sized black skipjack on the
offshore fishing grounds. Anglers are
also using yo-yo style jigs for a mix
of some bottom action.

Sportfishing fleets are mainly
concentrating on the grounds from the
Iman
to San Luis Bank, not much found on the
scouting trips to the Gordo Banks,
besides shark and a few billfish. The
more productive action has been
switching back and forth daily, some
days San Luis, others on the Iman.
Drift fishing for yellowfin tuna with
strips of squid, as well as slow
trolling live baits, has resulting in
yellowfin tuna catches, fish ranged
in sizes from 15 lb. to 80 lb. No big
numbers, most boats were having at
least a chance or two, some charters
landing as many as three or four tuna,
the best action seemed to be earlier in
the morning.

These same grounds were producing an
occasional dorado, a few nicer sized
bulls over 25 lb. were accounted for,
but only a scattered fish or two, at
least we are seeing these prized
fighting and popular gamefish present
in
local waters, they had been absent for
a long time during the cooler winter
and spring seasons.

The same areas where these surface
species are being encountered, there
have been options off the bottom while
drift fishing with various baits and
using the yo-yo style jigs. There were
a few variety of grouper, pompano,
amberjack, red snapper, yellow snapper,
bonito and others on these rocky
high spots. All of these being
excellent table fare.

All along the beach stretches now is a
great time for slowing baits for
roosterfish, now the peak season for
these gamefish, good chances at
hooking into fish over 40 lb., even to
50 and 60 lb. Remember that this
species is known for their prized
fighting capabilities, not for eating
quality, these fishing should always be
released, care should be taken
while taking a quick photo for
documentation of the catch before
releasing.

Striped marlin are scattered throughout
the area now, right around the Iman
bank and towards the Gordo Banks, no
huge concentrations, but if you are
interested in catching one of these
fish, the odds are fairly high now that
you find opportunity. Most of the
stripers are now averaging 70 to 120
lb.
Will not be long until we start seeing
the larger blue and black marlin
showing up in the warmer summer
currents.

The combined sportfishing fleet
launching out of the panga area from
Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out an
estimated 78 charters for the week and
anglers reported an approximate fish
count of: 14 striped, 9 dorado, 48
yellowfin tuna, 3 dogtooth snapper, 8
leopard grouper, 4 African pompano,
180 Mexican bonito, 34 red snapper, 12
yellow snapper, 13 amberjack, 44
roosterfish, 14 jack crevalle and 70
triggerfish.

San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –

June 16, 2019

With the official start to the summer
season set to start next weekend we
continue to see fluctuating crowds of
visiting anglers, last week we had
increased numbers now this week we see
fewer people arriving. Weather is
progressively heating up, high
temperatures into the lower 90’s. Later
in
the week we saw more marine cloudy and
overcast conditions. While Pacifica
waters are still cool, in the upper
60’s, off of San Jose del Cabo the
ocean reached 80 degrees, swirling
winds were unpredictable, earlier in
the
week we felt breezes predominately from
the north, laying down mid-week,
then later in the week it was the south
wind that really kicked up,
actually blowing conditions out on
Friday and contributed in pushing in
colder greenish Pacific water, ocean
temperatures dropped to 70 degrees
overnight. Now as weather settles
conditions will rebound quickly.

The fishing action last week was very
encouraging, as we saw more numbers
of yellowfin tuna, continued quality
action for striped marlin, a few
dorado finally showing up, as well as
options inshore for roosterfish and
for a mix of quality eating bottom
species. This week with weather
patterns
a bit more unstable we had much more
scattered overall action, changing
from day to day, but the tuna action
and marlin proved more elusive and
even bottom produced minimal. There
were some highlights though, with
anglers catching and release trophy
sized 50 lb. roosterfish, even landing
a couple of wahoo, dorado, sailfish and
striped marlin and an occasional
nice sized amberjack or red snapper. A
lot of variety in the area, though
no particular species was overly
numerous.

With warmer currents the local bait
vendors were finding more caballito, as
well as moonfish, ballyhoo and slabs of
squid were also available. Inside
the Puerto Los Cabos Marina channel we
saw mass schools of jack crevalle
breaking into a feeding frenzy and
local anglers got into this action,
chasing these 25 lb. jacks around the
docks and jetties.

The action on the San Luis Bank for the
Mexican bonito and red snapper
while working the yo-yo jigs proved
much more difficult in recent days, the
weather did not help at times, the tuna
had been hitting early in the week
on trolled caballito and strips of
squid, yellowfin ranging from 20 to 80
b., but this action came to a
standstill later in the week.

This transition period can often be
like this, sometimes it is not until
mid-July before conditions really
stabilize and we finally have more
consistent day to day action.

These next couple of weeks is when we
historically see some of the largest
sized roosterfish of the season. We
expect to see mass migration of mullet
baitfish to move in any time, this in
turn brings in more of these inshore
gamefish.

*T*he combined sportfishing fleet
launching out of the panga area from
Puerto Los Cabos Marina reported an
estimated 70 charters for the week and
anglers reported an approximate fish
count of: 1 sailfish, 7 dorado, 2
wahoo, 7 striped marlin, 19 yellowfin
tuna, 2 dogtooth snapper, 11 leopard
grouper, 98 Mexican bonito, 32 red
snapper, 14 amberjack, 24 roosterfish,
22 jack crevalle, 4 yellow snapper and
70 triggerfish.
