Good consistent offshore SAILFISH action continued in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo last week.
First time visitor to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo from Davis California, Mr. Frank Chan, landed 5 SAILFISH and 2 SHARKS on his first day offshore with Captain Cheva on the Dos Hermanos 2. Oregon Angler, Jerry Anthous fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 with Captain Adolofo Espinosa Landed 4 SAILFISH in one day and also broke a rod on another BIG SAILFISH. Cabela's Outdoor Adventure Client's Pat & Beth Flood also fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 landed 6 SAILFISH, 17 RAINBOW RUNNERS, 5 BONITOS, 3 NEEDLEFISH and 1 YELLOWTAIL JACK in 3 days of fishing. Fly Fishing specialist Captain Temo on the Secuestro De Amor while fishing with angler John Benbow went 2 for 9 SAILFISH on a fly. Conditions are near perfect for offshore but the inshore the roosterfish bite has still not developed.

Our congratulations to Captain Adolofo and wife Patrita as they delivered their third child, a baby girl this week. Mom and new born are both doing well.

Leading the pack was MR Erik Vlemming's group from Holland while fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 & 2, and Leydy a total of 7 offshore days landing 31 SAILFISH and 8 DORADOS. While fishing inshore the group landed 61 BONITOS, 2 RAINBOW RUNNERS, 7 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 1 TRAVELI, 7 SNAPPERS and 7 TIGER GROUPER. California angler, Mr. Curtis Swanberg landed 2 SAILFISH While fishing aboard the Vamonos 3. Returning new Jersey angler Herb Houghton also fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 did equally as well landing 2 SAILFISH in one day of fishing. Colorado Angler Dave Weiland turned in a great offshore day aboard the Vamonos 3 landing 7 SAILFISH and 2 DORADOS. Fly fishing angler Buddy Wright landed 4 SAILFISH in one day on a fly while fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 and captain Adolofo reported double digit billfish opportunities on several offshore days. Inshore, the Roosterfish remain a puzzle as 5 inshore charters turned up a single Roosterfish and that was landed by New Jersey angler Herb Houghton while fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1. Sea and weather conditions could not be more perfect than they are at this time.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO

IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water is within a half mile of the beach and the great sailfish action is still holding up. Baja on the Fly clients brothers Leon and Kyle Stiffarm fly-fished two days with Martin and I on the panga “Isamar.” Leon is an excellent fly-fisherman for huge trout on the local lakes he visits on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in Glacier National Park, but he had never fished saltwater before.

We changed that in a hurry! We raised 17 sails, had 10 follow the teasers to the boat, and hooked 5. The first few fish were learning experiences for the brothers, because they had to overcome a major case of adrenaline rush. They had never even seen fish so big, yet alone be able to reach out and touch them with the rod tip. After the shooting head was wrapped about 20 times around the rod tip, and a pulled fly ended up threading itself between the line and the rod, they settled down and hooked almost every fish that came to the boat.

While returning to the dock, I told them they easily would have had an 8 sailfish day if we had been using conventional gear. A few minutes later, as Adolpho on the panga “Dos Hermanos” pulled alongside, as prophesied, he was flying 7 tag-and-release flags.

IN GENERAL: The conditions and fishing remain the same as last week. Everything is outstanding. The 80º blue water is about 8 miles and the sailfish action is holding up. Captain Cali, on the “Vamonos II,” had successive days of 5, 8, 6, 5, 5, 6, and 8 sailfish caught and released on conventional tackle this last 7 day period.

Almost every boat is also getting a 20- to 30-pound dorado for dinner, on incidental strikes, while fishing for sails.

The inshore action is hold well with the roosterfish and large jack crevalle of 12- to 18-pounds.

IN GENERAL: We are having excellent fishing for sailfish right now. The 82º blue water is only 9 miles out and each boat is raising from 8 to 15 fish a day. The list for boats and clients who are catching and releasing, on conventional gear, 4 to 6 sails a day are actually too numerous to list.

Fly fishing clients, like Terry Carter of Cumberland, Ohio are hooking 2 to 3 sailfish a day average.

We also had the roosterfish move back in. Captain Adolpho is averaging 5 to 6 a day for his clients, with the fish running about 25 to 40 pounds.

 Category:  Mexico Ixtapa Zihuatanejo

An identical amount of SAILFISH were reported tagged and released on Tuseday, the second day of competition. The fleet of 9 offshore boats released 30 SAILFISH on day 2 which brings the total tournament catch to 60 SAILFISH. Although an equal amount of fish were caught they were not equally distributed. While only landing a single SAILFISH in day one, Larry Kent and Brian Bushell fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 took the daily Calcutta by and jumping back into contention by tagging and releasing 6 SAILFISH yesterday. Top teams continue to be TULIP THUDER from Holland with another 5 fish yesterday for a total of 10. Keeping pace is last year's winner's John Van Horn and Karl Wertz fishing aboard the Vamonos 2 who also landed and released 5 SAILS bring their total up to 10 as well. The van Horn team is in second place as only a time difference separates them from the first place team.

The Inshore teams are also in a dead heat with the Secuestro and anglers Mr. & Mrs. Petit leading the competition with 797 overall points followed by The Tarpon with Mr. & Mrs. Daughter with 619 points and last year's winner's Bob Lawrence and Mike Casten in third with 295 points.

Final totals will be posted this evening as fishing is schedule to end at 3 PM today.

A the field of 30 anglers opened the first day of the 2003 Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Total Tag & Release tournament with a bang. Condition continue to improve as Sailfish counts rise in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo.. Best single offshore day was turned in by first time angler from France , Mr. Michel who landed 7 SAILFISH while fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 with captain Cheva. Mr. Michel also landed 2 ROOSTERFISH, 6 YELLOWTAIL JACKS 1 BIG EYE JACK and several NEEDLEFISH on his one inshore day aboard the Dos Hermanos 2. Returning angler Mr. Jim Paulk fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 with Captain's Chiro and Efraine was not far behind as he landed 4 SAILFISH on his first day offshore Coming in a close third was Pennsylvania Angler Tom Branoff who released 3 SAILFISH and lost two others in one day while fishing aboard the La Bamba. French Angler Mr. Montiel fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 found an aggressive school of SAILFISH and managed to land only 3 SAILFISH out of 12 Hook-ups, all in one day. Also from France, Mr. Poquin fishing his first offshore day landed 3 SAILFISH, 1 Bonito and 1 Chula. Returning angler Mr. Sanders fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 landed 2 SAILFISH in one day. The arrival of good numbers of SAILFISH is just in time as this year's annual Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Total Tag & Release Tournament is Scheduled to Kick-off on Monday November 17th. The Inshore fishery continues to build as well but the Roosterfish continue to be difficult to catch. We will provide daily reports from the tournament regarding the fishing conditions and the scoring.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO

IN GENERAL: If the full moon is affecting our fishing, I can't wait to see how good it is going to be in another week as the cycle ends. The 82º cobalt blue water is at 9 miles and we are finding fish at 11 miles.

Most every boat fishing conventional gear is averaging about 3 to 4 sailfish a day. Today, fly-fishing client Norman Turgeon of Seattle, Wash., fished with Martin and me on the panga “Isamar.” He hooked two sailfish, both released. We estimated one of the fish at 100 pounds, or perhaps 5- or 10-pounds larger. I wrote 100-pounds and 10-feet long on the tag release card.

About 12 miles south of Zihuatanejo Bay, inshore fishing for jack crevalle has really gotten hot. These fish are averaging 15-pounds and are in huge numbers. We are also still getting very good numbers of 30- to 40-pound roosterfish in the back edge of the surf lines.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Conditions are definitely improving as we head into our winter
'high season.' Unlike the Baja Peninsula, this southern part of the Mexican
mainland is basically known as a winter fishery. Nov. is usually the first
month to give it a kick start.

The 84º clean water is only 5 to 6 miles out and the game fish are starting to respond. The sailfish action is improving, with at least two to three releases per boat. Whenever we get to talking, all the captains are very optimistic about the upcoming weeks of fishing.

Nine longtime friends from the Seattle area are here on their annual sailfish fly fishing trip. They are fishing five days on pangas, with fishermen rotating to a different panga each day. Currently, at the end of their second day of fishing, Martin on the “Isamar”and Calli on the “Zapatita” each have three sailfish caught and released.

Arturo on the panga “Janeth” and Adolpho on the panga “Dos Hermanos” are both
fishing with clients from France and averaging about 3 roosterfish a day. The fish are running 30 to 40 pounds.
