It was early morning and
my cousin and I were
heading out to do a
little grouper fishing.
We arrived at our sweet
spot at around 10:00 but
there was already a bunch
of boats on our spot so
we decided to fish a ship
wreck about 100 yards
away from our spot so we
figured there ought to be
some groupers here. We
dropped the anchor and I
dropped my bucktail jig
down into the obis
waiting for something to
suck it in. Nothing is
happening. Absolute
silence. Then, all the
sudden I hear my cousin
screaming, 'Cobias,
cobias, cobias, cobias!'
So I quickly reeled up my
jig and casted out near
the giant school of
Cobias and 'boom!'
Probably the biggest fish
in the school clobbered
my jig! All I hear is my
boat captain and my
cousin screaming 'hooked
up hooked up hooked up!'
I'm fighting this fish
for 20 minutes now. Every
time, it seemed when I
got 30 yards of line
back, i'd loose it again.
Time after time this
happened, then finally, I
got it to the boat, and
my cousin ran and grabbed
the gaff and hooked him
and pulled him in the
boat! I screamed at the
top of my lungs! I just
landed the once in a
lifetime cobia! That fish
was so big, even the
captain said he has never
seen a cobia that big
caught off his boat in
years! We put in in the
well, drove back to the
marina, and weighed it.
81 pounds 1 ounce! A
world class cobia! |
